How to Find a Lush Cave in Minecraft

Lush caves are one of the most beautiful biomes in Minecraft. They sit underground and only break the surface in specific ways, which makes them tricky to track down blind — but there is a clear above-ground signal that tells you a lush cave is below your feet. Once you know what to look for, you will spot them everywhere.

What is a Lush Cave?

Lush caves are an underground biome added in the 1.18 Caves & Cliffs update. They are bright, green, and packed with vegetation that does not grow anywhere else: moss blocks, glow berries, spore blossoms, azalea, dripleaf and clay floors. They also generate small ponds with axolotls and tropical fish — one of only two ways to find axolotls in survival without buckets and exploration trips.

Visually, they are the opposite of every other cave in the game. Most caves are dark and stony. Lush caves are bright green, lit by glow berries hanging from the ceiling, and feel more like a sunken garden than a dungeon.

The surface marker: azalea trees

This is the single most useful fact about lush caves: every lush cave has an azalea tree growing on the surface above it. Azalea trees only spawn directly on top of lush cave biomes. If you see one, there is a lush cave somewhere directly below.

Azalea trees look like a normal tree with a thick canopy of pink and green flowering azalea leaves. They stand out clearly against any biome — especially in dark forests, spruce taigas and other dim woods. The flowering pink top is the giveaway.

Azalea trees can spawn in almost any Overworld biome that supports tree growth — jungle, taiga, dark forest, even on a mushroom field if the lush cave generates under one.

Search patterns that work well:

  • Walk any densely-treed biome (jungle or dark forest) with elytra + rockets — the pink canopy pops from above.
  • Watch cave openings and mountain cliffs for glow-berry vines dangling out — that's a lush cave breaking the surface.
  • Fly over a mushroom field if you happen across one; azaleas there are rare but obvious.

Getting down into the cave

Once you have spotted an azalea tree, you have multiple ways down, some of the most common are:

  1. Dig straight down (carefully). The best way to do this is stand in one spot, using your tool (shovel for dirt and clay, pickaxe for stone) and remove as many blocks as you can downwards on the block next to the one you are stood on. Once you cannot dig any more, place a torch where you are and jump down the 4-5 blocks you just dug. Then again dig down the next 4-5 blocks next to you and repeat. Avoid dropping into a hole you cannot escape from or see the bottom of.
  2. Look for an existing crack or ravine nearby. Some lush caves break the surface naturally, especially in mountainous biomes or near jungles. A nearby ravine often connects. You can then use the vines to climb down or you can jump down a few blocks at a time to get to the bottom.
  3. Mine next to the azalea tree. Light up the area near the azalea tree to keep safe from mobs, then start digging out a staircase. Dig down one block at a time and try to keep it 3-4 blocks high. The next block forward you dig down one block again. Ideally do 10 steps down, dig out a 2x2 area (place a torch), and then from the bottom step move across one block and turn 180 degrees (face the opposite way) and dig down again 10 blocks and repeat. This gives you a staircase that keeps you in the same area as the azalea tree.

Once you are in you will notice unlike other caves and some underground biomes the lighting shifts to become lighter in areas. Glow berries hanging from cave vines can provide enough light to see by, but it is still advisable to light up the area with torches.

What to collect inside

Lush caves are a one-stop shop for several blocks and items you cannot easily get anywhere else:

  • Moss blocks — place one on the ground and use bone meal directly onto the moss block and it will spread, turning stone and dirt into a mix of moss blocks with moss carpet, azaleas and flowering azaleas and a mix of grasses. Works anywhere above ground too — a cool trick if you want a lush-type feel around your base.
  • Glow berries — you can eat them to revive your hunger and use them as a light source. Place them on the underside of a block and they will keep growing down slowly like a vine; on each growth there is an 11% chance of the new piece of vine being a glow berry.
  • Spore blossoms — ceiling decoration that emits green spore particles. Great for builds.
  • Azalea and flowering azalea bushes — decorative and renewable.
  • Big and small dripleaf — small dripleaf grows on clay; big dripleaf can be used as a platform that drops a player when stood on for too long. Useful for traps and parkour.
  • Clay — lush caves have small ponds with clay underneath, much easier to mine than ocean-floor clay.
  • Axolotls — pick them up in a water bucket. They fight drowned, guardians, and elder guardians for you.

Lush caves are a great starter base

If you are starting a new survival world and find a lush cave near spawn, consider building inside it. They have several survival advantages:

  • Pre-lit by glow berries — mob spawning is reduced before you have placed a single torch.
  • Renewable food — glow berries grow on cave vines, and you can plant more.
  • Built-in water source — cave ponds save you a bucket trip.
  • Clay on tap — bricks early.
  • Sheltered from weather and most mobs by default.

The fastest way to find one — a seed map

Walking around looking for azalea trees works, but it can take a while. The fastest way is to drop your world seed into the SeedLander seed map and switch to the underground biome layer — lush caves show up as bright green patches on the map. You can see where the nearest one sits relative to spawn before you even leave your base.

This works on Java, Bedrock and Java Large Biomes. Biome generation differs between editions so make sure you select the right one.

Tips for lush cave trips

  1. Bring shears. The only way to harvest azalea bushes intact is with shears. Otherwise you get nothing back.
  2. Carry a water bucket. For axolotl pickup, ravine descents, and emergency lava blocks.
  3. Use bone meal. If the cave is small, bone-meal a moss block — it converts surrounding stone into more moss, expanding the biome and the resources you can harvest.
  4. Watch for mobs. Hostile spawns are reduced but not zero. Skeletons and creepers can still appear in dim corners.
  5. Mine clay carefully. Use a stone shovel or better — otherwise the clay drops and water washes it away.

Lush caves are one of those biomes that just feels rewarding. The first time you find one is a small moment, and once you know the azalea trick you spot them constantly. Drop your seed into the seed map, find the nearest one, and head out.

Frequently asked questions

What biome do lush caves spawn in?

Lush caves are their own underground biome — they sit UNDER an Overworld biome rather than replacing it. The surface above a lush cave can be jungle, taiga, dark forest, plains, even a mushroom fields patch. The lush cave is what generates below ground level.

How do you find a lush cave in Minecraft?

Walk the surface looking for azalea trees. Every azalea tree grows on top of a lush cave — no exceptions. Dig straight down under the trunk and you land in the biome. Faster: paste your world seed into the SeedLander seed map, switch on the underground biome layer, and every lush cave patch shows up bright green.

What Y-level are lush caves at?

Lush caves generate anywhere in the underground layer that hosts caves — most commonly Y 0 to Y 60, sometimes deeper. There is no single "peak Y" like ores — the biome fills whatever cave carves through its noise band.

Are azalea trees always above lush caves?

Yes. Azalea trees only spawn directly on top of a lush cave biome — it is Mojang's deliberate surface signal. If you see the pink-flowering canopy, there is a lush cave under your feet. Sometimes the cave is deep so you may need to dig a while, but it is always there.

What blocks can you get from a lush cave?

Moss blocks (bone-mealable, spreads over stone), glow berries (food + light source), spore blossoms (ceiling decoration), azalea and flowering azalea bushes, big and small dripleaf, and clay from the small underground ponds. All are much easier to gather here than anywhere else in the world.

Where do axolotls spawn?

Axolotls spawn naturally only in lush cave water pockets, under a solid ceiling, below Y 63 in Java (below Y 62 in Bedrock). Pick them up in a water bucket. They will fight drowned, guardians and elder guardians alongside you.

Are lush caves safe? Do hostile mobs spawn?

Mostly safe. Hostile spawns are reduced because glow berries provide passive light — but not zero. Skeletons and creepers can appear in dimmer corners and along adjacent stony cave connections. Torch the edges before you settle in.

Can you make a base in a lush cave?

Yes — they are one of the best natural starter bases in the game. Pre-lit by glow berries, renewable food from cave vines, cave ponds for water, clay on tap, sheltered from weather. Many players just clear the mobs and move in.
