How to Find an Ancient City in Minecraft

Ancient city structure in the deep dark biome with sculk and soul fire

Ancient cities are the most dangerous — and most rewarding — structures in Minecraft. They generate deep underground in the deep dark biome, full of sculk, dim light, and the threat of the Warden. The loot is some of the best in the game, including the only place to find Swift Sneak books and a real shot at finding a music disc 5.

This guide covers where ancient cities generate, how to find one safely, what to look out for inside, and how to fight (or sneak past) the Warden.

What Is an Ancient City?

An ancient city is a massive abandoned structure made of deepslate, sculk, soul fire candles, and reinforced deepslate. They generate only in the deep dark biome, which itself only exists below Y=0. The cities are huge — some span over 200 blocks across — with multiple buildings, a central palace-like structure, and rooms branching off into smaller chambers.

Inside are chests with great loot: enchanted diamond gear, mob heads, golden apples, candles, music discs, and the rare Swift Sneak enchantment book. There is also a portal-like structure made of reinforced deepslate at the centre, often nicknamed “the portal” even though nothing currently happens with it.

Where Ancient Cities Generate

Ancient cities only generate in the deep dark biome, which only forms below Y=0 in mountainous regions. They are most likely under:

  • Mountain biomes (jagged peaks, frozen peaks, stony peaks)
  • Meadows
  • Snowy slopes
  • Grove biomes

You will not find one under flat plains or oceans. The Y-level varies but most cities sit somewhere between Y=-50 and Y=-30, well below normal cave systems.

How to Find an Ancient City

There are three practical ways to track one down:

Method 1: Use a Seed Map

By far the fastest way. Drop your world seed into the SeedLander Ancient City Finder and it shows you every ancient city around your spawn, with coordinates. Mine a staircase down to the city’s coordinates and you are in.

This works for both Java and Bedrock, but make sure you select the right edition — the same seed produces different ancient city positions on each.

Method 2: Listen for Sculk

If you are exploring caves below mountainous biomes and start seeing sculk patches on the floor or walls, you are in the deep dark. Follow the sculk — it gets denser the closer you are to a city. The dimming light and the eerie ambient sound (a low whirring hum) are also dead giveaways.

Method 3: Mine Down From a Mountain Base

If you have a base in a mountain biome, dig a 2×1 staircase down to around Y=-40 and start exploring outwards. You will hit deep dark territory eventually if your base is in the right biome. This is slow but works without external tools.

How to Survive the Warden

The Warden is the apex predator of Minecraft. It is blind, but it tracks you by sound and vibration. Step on a stone, break a block, or take fall damage and a sculk sensor or shrieker will alert it.

A sculk shrieker (left) and three sensors. Stepping into a sensor’s range triggers the shrieker, and four shrieks summons a Warden.

Sculk sensors detect vibrations within 8 blocks — footsteps, opening chests, breaking blocks, even arrows landing.

Sculk shriekers activate when a nearby sensor fires. After four shrieks anywhere in the deep dark, the Warden spawns.

Sneaking Past the Warden

  1. Crouch the entire time. Crouching does not trigger sensors.
  2. Use wool blocks. Wool absorbs vibrations completely — place it on top of sensors and shriekers to neutralise them.
  3. Throw snowballs as decoys. Sensors detect the snowball landing instead of you.
  4. Avoid breaking blocks. Mining nearby is the fastest way to summon a Warden.
  5. Drink milk if you get the darkness effect. Drinking milk clears the effect, though the Warden is already on its way.

Fighting the Warden

If you must fight, bring full netherite armour with Protection IV, a netherite sword with Smite V, regen potions, and a shield. The Warden hits for 30+ hearts a swing without armour. Even with full netherite Prot IV, two hits will down you. Most experienced players just sneak past.

What Loot to Target

Ancient city chests have great drops, but only a few are unique to the city:

  • Swift Sneak enchantment book — only found here. Speeds you up while crouching. Stack with Soul Speed boots for max sneak speed.
  • Music Disc 5 fragments — only here. Combine 9 fragments on a crafting table to get the disc.
  • Echo shards — used to craft a recovery compass. Only drop in cities.
  • Heavy core — in 1.21+. Used in mace crafting.
  • Enchanted diamond gear, golden apples, candles, soul torches.

Skip the redstone-related chests if you are short on inventory — the rare loot is in the chests near the central reinforced deepslate platform.

Tips for Your First Ancient City Trip

  1. Bring wool, lots of it. 64 wool, minimum. Place it on every sensor and shrieker you can reach.
  2. Bring potions of slow falling. Some cities have drops where falling is the only way down. Slow falling means no sensor trigger.
  3. Carry Smite V and a shield. If a Warden spawns and you cannot escape, give yourself a fighting chance.
  4. Use a third-person view (Java). The view distance helps you spot sensors before stepping on them.
  5. Save your map first. Sleep in a bed near your base before going down. If you die, you respawn with most of your gear intact.

Ancient cities are the highest-stakes structure in Minecraft. The combination of deepslate maze layouts, sculk traps, and the Warden makes every visit memorable. Drop your seed into the ancient city finder to plan your trip, then head down with wool and patience.
