Trial Chambers were added in the 1.21 Tricky Trials update. They are deep underground combat structures full of new mobs, the new Trial Spawner mechanic, and a reward system based on Trial Keys and Vaults. They are some of the best places in current Minecraft for fast XP, mob loot, and the new Mace weapon components.
Here is how to find one, what to bring, and what to expect inside.
What Is a Trial Chamber?
A Trial Chamber is a large procedurally-generated dungeon made of copper, tuff, and waxed copper. Each chamber is a maze of connected rooms with multiple combat encounters, parkour challenges, and trapped corridors. The structure is designed to be replayable — the spawners reset on a per-day cycle, so you can come back and farm the same chamber over time.
The structure includes:
- Trial Spawners — spawners that activate when a player approaches and stop spawning once a fixed number of mobs are killed. They drop a Trial Key when emptied.
- Vaults — lockable containers that open with a Trial Key and drop loot per player who uses one (instanced loot — everyone in the chamber gets a share).
- Ominous Vaults — harder Vaults that drop better loot. Require an Ominous Trial Key, obtained from Ominous Trial Spawners.
- New mobs: Breeze (jumping wind-puff mob), Bogged (poison-arrow skeleton), and existing mobs like Husks and Cave Spiders.
Where Trial Chambers Generate
Trial Chambers generate between Y=-40 and Y=30 in the Overworld, in any biome. They are deep enough that you will not stumble into one without digging or thoroughly exploring caves — but they tend to be near other underground structures, so cave systems are a good place to look.
One Trial Chamber typically appears every few thousand blocks of world. They are not as common as mineshafts but more common than ancient cities.
How to Find a Trial Chamber
Method 1: Use a Seed Map
The fastest way by a wide margin. Drop your world seed into the SeedLander Trial Chambers Finder and it shows every chamber within range. Mine straight down to the chamber’s coordinates and you are inside.
This works for Java and Bedrock. Trial Chamber positions are the same on both editions in 1.21+.
Method 2: Cave Exploration
Trial Chambers connect to natural cave systems, so they often have an entrance you can walk into if you explore caves long enough. The giveaway is copper-coloured walls — tuff bricks and waxed copper jut into the cave system. Anything that looks like deliberately-placed copper is a Trial Chamber wall.
Method 3: Listen for Trial Spawner Sounds
Trial Spawners have a distinctive humming, charging sound when active. If you hear an unfamiliar mechanical hum while exploring caves, follow it.
What to Bring
Trial Chambers throw waves of mobs at you. Come prepared:
- Iron or diamond armour minimum. Bogged poison arrows hit hard with no armour.
- A bow with Power III+ or a crossbow. Breezes are hard to hit in melee — range matters.
- A shield. Bogged arrows can be deflected.
- Plenty of food and milk. Poison and venom effects are common from Bogged and cave spiders.
- Water bucket. For lava emergencies and breeze knockback recovery.
- Empty inventory slots. Vaults can drop a lot of items per run.
Trial Spawners and Vaults
The core mechanic of a Trial Chamber:
- You approach a Trial Spawner.
- It activates and starts spawning mobs in waves.
- Kill all the mobs from one wave to trigger the next.
- After the final wave, the spawner drops a Trial Key.
- Take the key to a nearby Vault and right-click. The Vault opens and drops loot for you specifically.
A Vault remembers which player has opened it — so on multiplayer servers, every player gets their own loot from each Vault. You cannot loot the same Vault twice on the same day.
Ominous Trials (Harder Mode)
Drink an Ominous Bottle (loot from a normal Vault, or earned by clearing a Pillager Outpost) before entering a Trial Chamber. This activates Bad Omen, which converts Trial Spawners into Ominous Trial Spawners — harder versions with more mobs per wave, stronger variants, and Ominous Trial Keys as rewards.
Ominous Vaults — openable with Ominous Trial Keys — drop the rare loot:
- Heavy Core — the centrepiece for crafting a Mace.
- Wind Charges in larger quantities
- Higher tier enchanted books, including Wind Burst and Density (mace-only enchantments)
- More golden apples and emerald blocks
The Heavy Core is the only way to craft a Mace, currently the most powerful melee weapon in Minecraft (especially when paired with the Density and Wind Burst enchantments and a high-fall slam).
Tips and Tricks
- Set spawn at the entrance. Sleep in a bed before entering. If you die, you respawn close enough to retrieve your gear.
- Block off cleared rooms. Place cobblestone in doorways behind you so newly-spawned mobs cannot flank you.
- Save Ominous Bottles for Vault runs. Use Bad Omen on a chamber you have already partially cleared, since it lets you go straight to the Ominous Vaults.
- Use the Wind Charges. Breezes drop Wind Charges — throw them at activator plates to access locked rooms.
- Trial Chambers are repeatable. Vaults reset their loot drop on a real-time-day cycle. Come back tomorrow for another loot pass.
Trial Chambers are the best repeatable structure for combat-focused players. The Mace is worth the trip alone. Drop your seed into the trial chambers finder and head down.
