Every witch hut in your swamps. Potion farming and slime chunks often nearby.

Witch Huts (Swamp Huts) are small wooden structures in Swamp and Mangrove Swamp biomes at Y-levels 65 to 75. They contain a Witch, a Cat, a crafting table, and a cauldron. Witch drops include Redstone Dust, Glowstone Dust, Sugar, Sticks, Gunpowder, and rare Splash Potions.

Witch huts are small stilted spruce-plank structures in swamp biomes where witches spawn continuously — making them essential for building witch farms. The SeedLander Minecraft Witch Hut finder shows you the location of every Witch Hut across a wide radius in your world so you can identify the best farming spots. Each hut also starts with one witch and a black cat inside, both persistent and both worth knowing about before you approach.

Witch farms produce redstone dust, glowstone dust, gunpowder, sugar, glass bottles, and other potion ingredients automatically. Finding multiple Witch Huts near each other creates a multi-hut farm with dramatically higher output. Enter your seed to find every Witch Hut on both Java and Bedrock editions.

The Witch Hut is unique among Minecraft structures because its primary value is not the loot inside but the spawning mechanic it creates. As long as the structure’s bounding box exists, witches will continuously spawn within it regardless of the original hut being modified or removed. This makes Witch Huts permanent resource generators that never run out.

For technical Minecraft players, the Minecraft Witch Hut finder is one of the most important seed analysis tools. The dream find is a swamp with two or more Witch Huts close enough that they share the same mob-spawning area — much higher witch output for the same farm build. The finder’s map overlay makes it easy to spot adjacent huts clustered in large swamp regions.

Frequently Asked Questions

⚠

Bring milk, not just a sword

Witches throw splash potions of Poison, Weakness and Slowness. A milk bucket cancels the effects, and an iron sword is usually enough to finish them quickly once you're close enough to melee.

How Witch Huts Work in Minecraft

Witch huts are those small stilt-raised cabins you sometimes spot in swamps and mangrove swamps. The building itself is modest — four dark-oak walls, a crafting table, a flower pot with a red mushroom, a cauldron, and a cat. What makes them worth finding is the permanent witch spawn underneath: a hut-specific spawner that keeps producing witches regardless of light level, which is the foundation of every serious witch farm.

The finder above shows every Witch Hut in a wide radius of your seed. Pop your seed in, pick your edition and version, and the pins land straight on the stilts. If you want free gunpowder, redstone, glowstone dust, sugar and sticks for the rest of your world's life, a Witch Hut farm is the easiest long-term source in the game. The full Seed Map shows Witch Huts overlaid on the swamp biomes they sit in, plus nearby Slime Chunks (slimes also spawn in swamps).

What Makes a Witch Hut Special

  • BiomeWitch Huts only generate in swamps. The hut itself sits on wooden stilts and is almost always perched over shallow water, which is a useful visual cue when you're scanning a swamp from a boat.
  • Hut-spawn zoneThe unique thing about a Witch Hut is the small invisible spawn zone built into it — witches spawn there continuously regardless of light level, day or night. That's the foundation of every witch farm design you'll see online.
  • Cat insideEvery Witch Hut comes with a resident black cat. The cat is harmless and can be tamed with raw fish, which makes it a nice low-effort start to a cat collection.
  • DangerThe danger level is moderate. Witches are tougher than zombies because they throw splash potions of poison and weakness, but a decent iron sword to dispatch them and a milk bucket to clear the effects make any single witch easy to deal with.
  • VersionWitch Huts were added in the 1.4 Pretty Scary update and have generated in swamps in every world since.

What to bring for the witches

Milk bucket Milk bucket

A milk bucket immediately cancels any potion effect a witch lands on you. Witches throw splash potions of Poison, Weakness and Slowness — drink the milk the moment you see a glass bottle arc through the air toward you and the effect is gone before it can do real damage. Craft a milk bucket by right-clicking a cow with an empty bucket; bring two if you can spare them.

Iron sword Iron sword or better

An iron sword (or better) is the right melee weapon for a witch fight. Witches have 26 health points — surprisingly tanky for a swamp mob — and take three or four solid hits to finish off. The trick is closing the distance quickly so they can't keep throwing potions at you from range. Up close, they switch to a healing potion, so finish them while they're drinking.

Shield Shield

A shield blocks splash potions of Poison and reduces the duration of Weakness effects landed on you. Witches don't do much melee damage themselves, so most of the threat comes from their potions — which makes a shield far more useful here than against, say, a zombie. Craft one with six wooden planks and an iron ingot. Even players who don't usually carry a shield should bring one for a witch farm visit.

Bow Bow + arrows

A bow is optional but handy at a Witch Hut. Witches can't dodge arrows and they don't move well — if the swamp terrain gives you a clear shot, you can usually pick one off from range before it ever gets close enough to throw a potion at you. Bring at least 16 arrows; a few solid hits brings a witch down even with an unenchanted bow.

Turning the Hut Into a Farm

A witch-hut farm gives you unlimited redstone dust, glowstone, gunpowder, sugar and sticks. Not Mending-book levels of useful, but if you're auto-crafting anything, the supplies add up fast.

  1. Light up the swamp around the hut thoroughly with torches. The whole point of a Witch Hut farm is that the hut's built-in spawn zone is the ONLY place witches can spawn within range of you. Other dark spaces in the surrounding swamp will compete for the mob cap and dramatically slow your farm. Glowstone or sea lanterns work even better if you've got them.
  2. Build a small kill chamber attached to the hut. Use water streams to push spawned witches into a single collection point, then kill them automatically with a magma block (1 damage per second), a fall pit (about 23 blocks deep is the magic number), or a trident killer (most efficient, drops XP). Each method has tradeoffs — magma is simplest, fall pits give you the cleanest drops, trident killers give you XP but need a Channeling trident.
  3. Place a hopper directly under the kill point and run a chain of chests off the hopper to collect everything automatically. Witches drop redstone, glowstone dust, sugar, gunpowder, spider eyes, glass bottles and sticks — basically every common potion ingredient. Without the hopper-and-chest line, items just despawn after five minutes.
  4. Pick an AFK spot roughly 30 blocks directly above the hut and stand there. Mobs only spawn within ~128 blocks of a player, so being too far away kills your farm — but standing too close puts you at risk of any witches that wander out of the kill chamber. About 30 blocks above is the sweet spot: spawn zone active, you're safely out of melee range.
  5. If you play on a multiplayer server (an SMP), fence off the surrounding area or mark it clearly. A friend wandering past while AFK-farming can disrupt the spawn cycle (mobs despawn when no players are nearby for too long) and resets your output at the worst possible moment. A simple sign or fence saves a lot of frustration.

Pair it with a swamp run

Swamps are naturally near slime chunks (slimes spawn in swamp biomes too), which means a single swamp trip can double as a slime chunk scout. Plains villages on the swamp edge are common and make a comfortable base. If your world has a mangrove swamp, you've got easy access to mud blocks for builds and mangrove wood for its unique warm colour.
