Netherite Finder

Enough ancient debris for full netherite. 24 debris = full tools + armour. Map every block in your seed before you TNT-mine.

Netherite is the top-tier gear material in Minecraft, crafted from Ancient Debris found in the Nether. A full netherite loadout — sword, pickaxe, axe, shovel, hoe and four-piece armour — needs 9 netherite ingots, which requires 36 ancient debris and 36 gold ingots. The Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template drops from Bastion Remnants and lets you apply the netherite upgrade to existing diamond gear rather than crafting from scratch. Ancient debris peaks at Y 15 in the Nether.

How the netherite finder works

Netherite gear starts with ancient debris — the rarest ore in Minecraft, generated only in the Nether. This finder plots every debris block in a 256-block radius of your Nether coordinates so you can plan a full netherite grind instead of blast-mining random chunks.

Head to the coordinates for debris, or copy them with one click and paste them straight into the Minecraft command line — if cheats are enabled — to teleport to a block. Full netherite needs 36 debris; the finder shows every block sorted by distance so you can grind them in order instead of hopping around.

Fortune III does not work on ancient debris

You always get exactly one debris per block regardless of enchant — Fortune has no effect. Save your Fortune III pickaxe for Overworld ores. In the Nether, run Efficiency V + Unbreaking III + Mending for speed and durability.

What you need for full netherite

A "full netherite" loadout means every tool and every armour piece. Here's the exact cost:

  • Sword: 1 netherite ingot = 4 debris + 4 gold
  • Pickaxe: 1 ingot = 4 debris + 4 gold
  • Axe: 1 ingot = 4 debris + 4 gold
  • Shovel: 1 ingot = 4 debris + 4 gold
  • Hoe (optional): 1 ingot = 4 debris + 4 gold
  • Helmet: 1 ingot = 4 debris + 4 gold
  • Chestplate: 1 ingot = 4 debris + 4 gold
  • Leggings: 1 ingot = 4 debris + 4 gold
  • Boots: 1 ingot = 4 debris + 4 gold

Full 9-piece loadout: 36 ancient debris and 36 gold ingots. Skip the hoe and you're at 32 debris — most players do. Skip the axe too (some people don't use it) and you're at 28.

You also need the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template to apply the upgrade. Bastion Remnants have a ~10% chance to drop the template from Generic loot chests, and it's traded by Piglins as a 10-item barter drop. Once you have one, you can craft copies at a Smithing Table using 7 diamonds + 1 netherrack per copy — so a single template covers infinite upgrades.

If you're new to the Nether hunt, Mojang's official How to Find Ancient Debris guide covers the finding side; the Block of the Week: Ancient Debris piece has the lore.

How to craft a netherite ingot

Ancient debris → netherite is a two-step craft:

  1. Smelt debris to Netherite Scrap. Any furnace works; blast furnaces smelt in half the time. Each debris block gives one scrap.
  2. Combine scraps and gold into an ingot. Four scraps plus four gold ingots on a crafting table produce one Netherite Ingot. This recipe requires all four scraps in the top-left 2×2 corner (or any 2×2 pattern) with four golds in the remaining slots.

Ingots are shapeless — you can use any 2×2 arrangement of the scraps and any four slots for the gold. This forgives grid-layout mistakes at 3am.

How to upgrade diamond gear to netherite

Netherite is an upgrade, not a fresh craft — you need existing diamond gear to convert. In a Smithing Table:

  1. Slot 1 (left): the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template
  2. Slot 2 (middle): the diamond tool or armour piece you want to upgrade
  3. Slot 3 (right): one netherite ingot

The output slot shows the netherite version with the same enchantments and durability as the input. Enchantments are preserved — so if you've got a Sharpness V Fire Aspect II diamond sword, upgrading it gives you a Sharpness V Fire Aspect II netherite sword. That's why players hoard diamond gear with god enchants specifically for netherite conversion.

Where to find the Smithing Template

Templates come from three places:

  • Bastion Remnant loot chests (~10% chance per Generic chest). Bastions are large Nether structures — use the Bastion Remnant Finder to locate one in your seed.
  • Piglin bartering. Give a Piglin gold ingots; roughly 1 in 100 barters returns a Netherite Upgrade template. Slow but reliable.
  • Ancient Cities also drop them occasionally on Bedrock (small chance in cold-hearth Ancient City loot).

Once you have one template, you can duplicate it infinitely at a Smithing Table: 7 diamonds + 1 netherrack + the template gives you 2 templates back. So the diamond cost of a single template is high, but the marginal cost of subsequent ones is 7 diamonds each.

Why netherite is worth the grind

Netherite gear beats diamond in every stat:

  • Durability: +37% (netherite sword lasts 2,031 uses vs diamond 1,561)
  • Damage / Toughness: netherite armour has +1 armour toughness per piece and knockback resistance (10% per piece)
  • Lava-proof. Netherite items float on lava instead of burning. Drop your netherite sword into lava — it survives. Diamond doesn't.
  • Cannot burn in fire. Fire ticks don't destroy netherite items on the ground.

The lava-proof property alone is why most Nether-heavy players prioritise the sword and pickaxe upgrades first — a lava death in the Nether with diamond gear means losing everything; with netherite you just fish your kit out of the lava.

Java vs Bedrock netherite differences

The netherite recipes and stats are identical between Java and Bedrock. What differs is the underlying noise placement of ancient debris in the Nether — the finder handles this automatically once you pick the edition. Templates from bastions also drop at the same rate. Netherite armour trims work identically on both editions.
